Energy transition of Nordic fisheries

Fisheries can provide nutritious food but is strongly dependent on fossil fuels. For the necessary climate transition, it is essential to reduce energy demand and switch to the use of alternative fuels. However, there are many challenges.

To catalyze the energy transition in fisheries, a newly established network intends to collaborate to increase the understanding of barriers and opportunities for effective energy transition in Nordic fisheries. The aim of this project is to be able to establish a more long-term collaboration that can support the continued energy transition by sharing experiences between countries and thus maintain the Nordic region's leading position in the field.

Based on the current state of knowledge, the perspectives of different Nordic countries will be presented at a conference in Gothenburg in November 2024, followed by a smaller workshop with the aim of identifying more long-term strategies for co-operation on the energy transition of fisheries in the Nordic region.

The conference is open for all and registration link is found below.

Conference: Catalyzing the energy transition of Nordic fisheries: How do we reach net zero emissions by 2050?

  • Place: RISE, Frans Perssons väg 6, Gothenburg, Sweden
  • When: 19th of November between 9:30 to 17

Background:

The energy transition, or decarbonization, of European fisheries, has gained a lot of attention recently, with a rapid acceleration in studies and initiatives. There is now a proposed EU target of net zero emissions of the fisheries sector by 2050, and a partial goal to reduce energy use by 15% by 2030. How can we achieve this?

On November 19, a one-day conference open for all will be held with the purpose to improve knowledge about differences between the Nordic countries in the management and monitoring of fuel use and emissions of fisheries – as well as the status of availability and use of alternative fuels to stimulate knowledge transfer and foster new collaborations.  The overall expected outcome is a clear understanding of the current situation in the Nordic countries and EU as well as challenges and knowledge gaps ahead and how these could be tackled through Nordic or European collaboration. What is needed for Nordic countries to stay in lead and support a speeding up of the energy transition of fisheries in Europe?

Warm welcome to get updated on the latest development and engage with different actors and initiatives!

Registration:

Participation is free of charge, but a “no show” fee is applied if cancellation is done less than 14 days prior to the event (see Booking terms). Lunch and coffee will be provided.

The conference programme is found below. Register here (before Friday Nov 8th). Limited space so make sure to book early!
