Engaging local fishery communities to boost the blue economy
ENSAMBLE is creating a wide, solid network of local fishermen communities in France, Italy and Tunisia that facilitate local sustainable development in the Mediterranean via the diversification of fishing activities.
Creating a local sustainable development strategy is a demanding task, especially if multiple stakeholders are involved. However, with the support of the EMFF (EHFF) funded ENSAMBLE project, fishery communities in Tunisia (El Haouaria and Tabarka), France (Corsica) and Italy (Tuscany) found a way to work together and share their best practices to diversify their fishing activities and boost the blue economy.
ENSAMBLE applies the community led local development approach, which lies at the heart of the common fisheries policy for the development of local fishery communities.
The main aim is to replicate good practices and form a local development strategy that includes:
- Promotion of sustainable eco-tourism focused on territorial heritage and traditions of the coastal towns and villlages;
- Strengthening links between land and sea;
- Engaging tourists into fishing activities;
- Creation of a concrete proposal for a common legal framework in the three countries.
The project has also been closely working with related networks (FARNET network), and has been learning from other relevant initiatives in the Western Mediterranean (i.e. the DEVLOK project).
As the project continues, ENSAMBLE is steadily increasing Mediterranean fishing operators’ professional and entrepreneurial skills; it’s developing new job opportunities and actively involving women and youth throughout the supply chain.
