ICES recommends 22% cut in Northeast Atlantic mackerel quota
With spawning populations "dangerously close to the precautionary level," the advice is the lowest in more than 10 years.
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has cut its recommended quota for Northeast Atlantic mackerel to 576,958 metric tons for 2025, its lowest advice in more than a decade and a 22 percent reduction on its recommendation for the current year.
The recommended quota is also 40 percent below the assumed mackerel catch for this year, the ICES and Norway's Institute of Marine Research (IMR) said in separate statements on Monday.
"The spawning population is dangerously close to the precautionary level," IMR stock manager Leif Nottestad said. "In order to maintain a stock that is sustainable, fishing pressure must be reduced.".....
