Putin confirms Russia’s exit from ICES convention
President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a bill denouncing the Convention on the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a law denouncing the 60-year-old convention through which the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is governed, effectively ending his country’s participation in the marine science body.
Russia will, however, continue to participate through other international organizations in decisions related to the management of fisheries in the North Atlantic region, representatives of its upper and lower houses of parliament said.
The ICES, which has 20 member countries including Russia, plays an integral part in guiding nations in the allocation of fishing quotas by providing scientific advice on fish stocks. Signatories to its convention, dating back to 1964, include the coastal states that border the North Atlantic, including the Baltic Sea.....
