REGISTER NOW: Stakeholder event on the common fisheries policy, 10 June 2022

Registrations are now open for a hybrid stakeholder event on the functioning of the common fisheries policy (CFP) and common market organisation (CMO), taking place on 10 June 2022 in Brussels, Belgium. Concluding a consultation process that started last December, the event will help the European Commission prepare the report on the functioning of the CFP and CMO, due both to be adopted by the end of the year.

The stakeholder event will take place in a hybrid setting, with participation possible both in Brussels and online. It will offer a unique opportunity to take stock of the functioning of the CFP and CMO and discuss challenges and best practices with all relevant stakeholders working in the fisheries and aquaculture world.

All stakeholders, including the fishing industry, non-governmental organisations, academic, scientific, social and economic partners are invited to take part in the event.

REGISTRATION for the event

Discussion will be organised around two thematic plenary sessions. The first session will cover the social, economic and environmental objectives of the CFP. How can fishers and producer organisations cope with crises and strengthen their resilience… with a focus on climate change, social aspects, markets and clean ocean. The second thematic session will revolve around innovation, resilience and governance in the fisheries world. All of this coupled with the challenges that have been identified throughout the consultation.

Background on the CMO report -  Conclusions from the common market organisation (CMO) online consultation.

The online questionnaire about the common market organisation (125 contributions) has yielded some interesting first results:

  • Market tools of the CMO regulation are generally considered relevant as they positively contribute to achieving the CFP objectives.
  • In particular, the key role ofproducer organisations to collectively manage producers’ activities is a major achievement of the reformed market policy.
  • Production and market plans are considered flexible and effective tools. However, financial support can sometimes improve and mechanisms are not always suitable for transnational organisations.
  • Consumer information, in particular labelling, is generally considered fit for purpose, although a plethora of eco-labels and too specific information puts some limits to the legibility of claims in some cases.
  • The contribution of The European Market Observatory for fisheries and aquaculture (EUMOFA) to more transparency and a better understanding of market developments is generally praised.

The CFP implementation is guided by the principles of good governance, taking into account the regional specificities and with involvement of stakeholders. This dialogue with stakeholders is essential for achieving the objectives of the CFP and thus for the preparation of the CFP report, due by the end of 2022.
