WHO Covid-19: Seafood is safe
The World Health Organisation, UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and food safety agencies are seeking to reassure consumers that seafood is safe and is in no way related to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Following an outbreak last week linked to Beijing’s largest food market, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has ruled that salmon is not the source of infection.
In looking for the source of the new infection, imported goods have been mentioned in the media prompting experts at the Chinese National Health Commission to state of imported seafood that ‘there is no evidence so far showing salmon are the origin or intermediate hosts of the coronavirus.
Despite these assurances the industry is still affected, with Norwegian exporters reporting logical challenges exporting to Beijing as a result of price increases and cancelled flights. “It is too early to say what impact the new outbreak of infection in Beijing will have on salmon exports,” commented Victoria Braathen, the Norwegian Seafood Council’s country director in China.
The National Fisheries Institute in the US is also concerned about the perceived link between seafood exports and the virus and has issued a statement reassuring consumers in China and beyond that seafood prepared in the US complies with strict protocols that are serving as a model for other countries.
