Why Devons fishermen decided catching fewer fish would help them ride out coronavirus storm
It´s never been an easy life and the health pandemic has brought a range of new challenges to the industry.
They´re used to weathering storms in Brixham's fishing industry but the coronavirus whirlwind looks to have some force in it yet and few know for sure which course it will take.
As key workers, fishermen from the town have continued to sail out to sea during the crisis. The large beam trawlers, whose winches and masts form part of the harbour skyline when in port, embark on their voyages to the English Channel and return with cuttlefish, crab, turbot, Dover sole and other marine delicacies which are served all over the world.
It is a tradition which goes back centuries and at last count the port is the largest in the UK by value of fish sold - more than £40 million in 2017.
Recently what the crews have found on their return after several days at sea is a changed landscape. Due to the coronavirus much of the market for their produce has disappeared and prices have hit rock bottom.
