WWF wants MSC to accelerate reforms, ensure ‘ecological rigor’ of standards

The The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is stepping up pressure against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a sustainability group that it cofounded, asking for reforms soon

In a statement issued last week, the group said that it is most concerned with ensuring the "ecological rigor" of the MSC's standards that it applies to fisheries it certifies as sustainable.

In this vein, the WWF wants to see three main changes at the MSC: additional oversight to ensure peer reviewer and stakeholder comments are "fully resolved"; assurances that the third-party conformity assessment bodies (CAB) that carry out fishery assessments are objective, independent and use "sound science"; and improve the objections procedure to ensure "opportunity for independent scientific review of a CAB’s scoring decision".

The statement follows MSC's earlier pledges of reform and WWF's response in support seeking "strong, more specific and more immediate commitments" from the MSC.

The WWF has previously taken the fisheries sustainability group to task over the MSC certification of the Echebastar Indian Ocean skipjack tuna fishery, an issue that has stayed in the public eye for years.
